I have over 20 years of experience in marathon photography. After my arrival at Canada, I tried to seek every opportunity to take part in local photography events. Luckily, I was referred by my old acquaintance and was given the chance to join the
BMO Vancouver Marathon 2022 (50th Anniversary). I became one of the official photographers and was assigned to shoot the finish line. Before the Marathon, I had a brief meeting with Jareen and Steven, the coordinators of the BMO Vancouver Marathon’s photography service, to discuss workload allocation. A new record number of 18,500 runners had joined the Marathon this year, featuring a full marathon, a half marathon and an 8k run.

Similar to my previous marathon photography experience in Hong Kong, all runners passed through the finishing point when they were about to complete the race. As I decided to shoot the runners at a close distance (5 -12 M), for equipment, I had chosen Cannon R6 and the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens. The shutter speed to 1/500 of a second was set. According to statistics, the fastest runner could finish a half marathon in about an hour. As for full marathon, it usually took a runner 2.5 hours to complete. On that day, I had spent more than 7 hours on my job and had shot over 10000 pictures. If you have joined the BMO Vancouver Marathon this year, why don’t you visit the “Marathon Photo Live” below, maybe your finish line photo was taken by me!
